Royal Commission: CONNECT Interim Report
People with disability are experiencing violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation across all aspects of their lives. This includes in education, health care and justice settings, and in their homes, workplaces and communities, our Interim Report says.
Released on Friday, the report says people with disability are experiencing a range of barriers to achieving inclusion within Australian society. Much more needs to be done to ensure the human rights of people with disability are respected and that Australia becomes a truly inclusive society.
The report details the experiences of many people with disability as well as the reasons they are exposed to violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation.
One2One will share these when they become available.
HaDSCO Complaints
The Health and Disability Services Complaints Office (HaDSCO) is an independent Statutory Authority offering an impartial resolution service for complaints relating to health, disability and mental health services.

Complaints to HaDSCo can be made by the person who received the service, a family member, representative and carer or a provider. To lodge a complaint on behalf of someone, it is a requirement to obtain permission from the complainant first. As part of their services HaDSCo assess, negotiate a settlement, conciliate and investigate complaints.
HaDSCO has updated the information sheet: Complaints about Disability Services [PDF] to provide information about the changes to the complaints handling arrangements from 1 December.

Merryn Tobin, Coordinator
“I commenced with One2One in February 2016, so almost 5 years. It has been wonderful to be part of a dynamic and supportive organization. Working in a very individualized service space has allowed me the opportunity to discover who people are, what they like and how they wish to be supported. Working from home allows the flexibility of managing my time in an effective manner. I have enjoyed working on Service Design as it touches on my love of writing.
I love the outdoors and getting out of the city. Time 4wding in my Jeep is always good although I haven’t done so much lately. I love photography and writing and will always have a camera with me when out. Happy to have one of my photos selected recently by an author for his 6th book.
I have three adult kids and two granddaughters. Proud moment this week was when my oldest granddaughter was named as Head Girl for her school next year”.
Nickname: Mezza
Heroes: Surgeons, firefighters and my dear late hubby Wayne
Proudest moment: Becoming a mum and grandmother (Narnie)
Fears: Being restricted, closed spaces, ants!
What makes you happy: My granddaughters
Dream: Have the book I am writing published.
How would you spend your last day on Earth? If I can’t be with my family, I would be alone in the Tarkine on the wild west coast of Tasmania… beautiful!!

Post-School Opportunities Research
There is a new research project looking into post-school opportunities for young adults with disability. It has been initiated by Dr Sarah Carlon, Research Manager at STaR Association, and also includes researchers from the Macquarie University.
The research investigates family perspectives around post-school opportunities for young adults with disability. It aims to find out if all young adults with disabilities:
- have the opportunity to continue their education after they leave school
- are able to find meaningful employment.
If you are a parent or guardian of a young adult, aged 18 – 30, with disability, you are invited by the STaR team to complete a survey. Access the survey here (external).
The information that you share will help identify how post school services for people with disability in Australia could be improved. The anonymous online survey will take around 10 – 15 minutes to complete.
When you complete the survey, you can enter a prize draw for the chance to win one of three $100 Coles Group/Myer gift vouchers.
This research has been approved by the Macquarie University Ethics Committee and the STaR Research Committee.
