COVID-19 Pandemic with Autism

(ABC Opinion piece by Nick McAllister)

Content warning: This story includes descriptions of a struggle with mental health.

“When COVID-19 came uninvited to Australia, Prime Minister Scott Morrison and other state leaders stood behind their lecterns and delivered their messages to all Australians.

But it felt to me they weren’t speaking to us all.

There was one important community of people, and that’s my community – people with autism — who couldn’t comprehend the information being delivered”.

WA Wheelchair Football League

Australian Football in Western Australia is set to become even more accessible with the creation of the WA Wheelchair Football League.

This inaugural competition will initially include teams representing three WAFL clubs – Swan Districts, East Perth, and Subiaco.

Played on a basketball court with goalposts at either end, WA Wheelchair Football involves teams of five facing off against each other with two defenders, two forwards, and one midfielder.

The WA Wheelchair Football League is presented by the WA All Abilities Football Association and Manager, Hayden Marchetto says ”It’s a blast, fun, tactical, and skillful game and we encourage everyone to give it a go with or without a disability.”

Find more information on the league here, or register your interest to join a team here.

Pharmacy COVID-19 Vaccinations

The NDIS are working with The Pharmacy Guild of Australia to make it easier for NDIS participants to book and access COVID-19 vaccinations through local community pharmacies.

For many people, accessing vaccines can be challenging, so the option to receive your COVID-19 vaccine at your local community pharmacy may be more accessible and suitable to your needs.

More than 3,500 community pharmacies are participating across the country and more than one million doses of Moderna will be available through pharmacies in October in addition to the AstraZeneca vaccine.

NDIS participants aged 12 and over are eligible for Moderna vaccine.

NDIS participants aged 18 and over can choose to book an appointment to receive AstraZeneca following an assessment from a health provider.

You can use this link to access the online booking system where you can select a local pharmacy, choose which vaccine (Moderna or AstraZeneca) you would like to receive and make a booking.
