One2One Grapevine – May 2019

We have some interesting online resources and events happening in Perth this month.

Our Health Counts Campaign

DDWA are working with the NSW Council for Intellectual Disability to seek better health care for people with intellectual disability.

DDWA are asking people to phone, email, use social media or visit candidates (especially those in marginal seats)  to talk about the problems people with intellectual disability experience in getting good health care.

When contacting your local candidate you can talk about the challenges that face a person with intellectual disability in getting good health care, especially from GPs. Issues like:

  • Communication challenges between GP and the person with disability,
  • Rushed consultations,
  • GPs assuming that health conditions are part of the disability, and
  • Sometimes GPs showing discriminatory attitudes to whether treatment is worthwhile.

If you have a particular experience you would like to tell them, please don’t hold back in speaking out so they understand the real problems you face.

Ask the candidate to contact their party’s health spokesperson and urge them to act to improve the health of people with intellectual disability. For the Liberal/Nationals Coalition, this is Health Minister Greg Hunt. For Labor, it is Shadow Health Minister Catherine King.

Please give the candidate the attached information sheet which spells out what we are asking the parties to commit to.

If the candidate wants to know more please suggest they contact the advocacy team at the Council for Intellectual Disability (02) 9211 1611 advocacy@nswcid.org.au

Finally, ask the candidate to let you know what response they get from their party.

Independent Living Centre

The Independent Living Centre WA (ILC) is a leading provider of assistive technology, equipment and home modifications across WA, supporting thousands of people living with disability. Their Community Allied Health Services team can help you to achieve goals that support:

  • Independence
  • Wellness
  • Safety
  • Communication
  • Learning
  • Recreation
  • Participating within their communities

One of their clients, Martie Taljard is a wife, mother and grandmother who enjoys being able to get out and about, shopping and keeping in touch with her family and friends.

When Mrs Taljard became eligible for WA NDIS, one of her goals was to maintain her independence.

To address her mobility issues Mrs Taljard worked with Independent Living Centre WA  Occupational Therapist and together they trialled and assessed a variety of scooters to find the right one for Mrs Taljard.

Today, Mrs Taljard can move around with much more ease and independence. Just as importantly, she is able to hold her husband’s hand on walks again. Read her full story here on the  ILC website.

ILC’s newly refurbished, purpose built, assistive technology display floor at Nedlands showcases some of the latest assistive equipment with new individual consulting rooms, a greater range of smart home technology, and the ability to visit the centre remotely via a telepresence robot known as BEAM.  ILC Community Allied Health Services team can demonstrate a range of equipment and technologies designed to support independence.
