One2One Grapevine – September 2019

We have some interesting online resources and events happening in Perth this month.

Special.

The straight-talking guidebook for parents coming to terms with their child’s disability, from Australian journalist Melanie Dimmitt.

Special: antidotes to the obsessions that come with a child’s disability is an uplifting, candid companion for parents in the early stages of navigating their child’s disability. Combining content from dozens of interviews with parents of children with wide-ranging disabilities (including Jocelyn Moorhouse, Chloe Maxwell and Ricky Stuart) alongside professional input from psychologists, researchers and specialists, it shares stories, advice and actionable coping strategies for parents not yet ready to sign up to ‘the special-needs club’.

Kick-Starting Your Child’s Career Journey

All families want their children to lead productive and fulfilling lives. People with disability also share this aspiration. More than 80% of people receiving the Disability Support Pension report they would like to have a job.

This updated guide by Sue Robertson, former Managing Director of Edge Employment Solutions, provides practical tips and information to help families plan constructively for their child’s future employment. You can access this resource free to download here.

The board is looking for people with disability or their family members, to join and:

  • Help them make sure we focus on the most important issues that affect people with intellectual and other developmental disability and their families
  • Ensure the organisation is well managed
  • Ensure the future direction of the organisation is sustainable.

The DDWA 2019 Annual General Meeting is on Wednesday 23rd October and the board is calling for new members to fill vacancies that will come up as terms of office expire. If you would like to nominate, please complete the attached proforma here and send to ddwa@ddwa.org.au.

National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) Survey

A sector-wide research project is currently being undertaken to understand the experience of participants of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

This project is being undertaken by independent market research consultancy, CoreData, with an advocacy objective to develop a public report using the aggregate data. This survey is to help CoreData to understand the impact of the NDIS on people accessing disability supports and services through the NDIS.  The project aim is to drive an evidence-based discussion about sector-wide issues disability service providers in WA are facing, and collectively shift the dial.

The link to the survey is attached here. The survey will take 12-15 minutes to complete.

Any feedback provided by you, your family or the people you support or their family will be valuable and kept confidential. All personal information provided while completing this survey will be handled in accordance with the Australian Privacy Principals detailed in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).

In appreciation, people will have the opportunity to be entered into a CoreData prize draw for a chance to win one of four $1,000 Flight Centre gift cards or one of twenty $100 GiftPay online gift cards. Terms and conditions can be found here.

If you have any questions about the survey procedures, you can contact CoreData by email to support@coredata.com.au.
